Validation of the Technological and Societal Innovation Potential of Scientific Research – VIP+

Last updated: 14.6.2025
Grant

The BMBF VIP+ program supports universities and research institutions in systematically validating their innovative research results. It aims to assess the technological and societal innovation potential early on and strengthen the bridge between discovery and exploitation, thereby unlocking significant economic or societal benefits.

Who is Funded

The BMBF's VIP+ program supports universities, non-university research institutions, and federal institutions with research and development tasks in Germany. The goal is to validate the innovation potential of scientific research and strengthen knowledge transfer to generate economic and societal benefits.

What is Funded

The VIP+ program focuses on the validation phase of research results from all scientific disciplines. Projects that systematically demonstrate innovation potential and prove feasibility and implementability are funded. Grants can be used for personnel, material, and travel expenses, as well as project-related equipment investments and intellectual property rights.

Type and Extent of Funding

Funding under the VIP+ program is provided in the form of non-repayable grants for projects with a duration of up to three years. The grant can amount to up to 500,000 Euros per project per year and covers up to 100% of the eligible project-related expenses or costs, with universities additionally receiving a project flat rate.

Conditions and Requirements

To receive funding from VIP+, applicants must submit a binding support concept that includes the involvement of innovation mentors and consideration of user requirements and legal frameworks. Collaborative projects require a written cooperation agreement. For institutions with economic and non-economic activities, a clear distinction between eligible, non-economic activities is necessary.

Application Procedure

The VIP+ application process is a one-stage, continuous process. Applications must be submitted via the easy-Online electronic application system and include specific documents such as the project description and declarations from stakeholders. An assessment by independent experts forms the basis for the BMBF's funding decision, which is based on detailed criteria such as innovation level and concept quality.

The VIP+ program is based on the "Guidelines for the Funding Measure 'Validation of the Technological and Societal Innovation Potential of Scientific Research – VIP+'". These guidelines, along with provisions of the Federal Budget Code and other administrative regulations of the BMBF, form the legal basis. Official texts are accessible via the Federal Funding Portal and in the Federal Gazette.
