Grant
Last updated: 14.6.2025

The state of Schleswig-Holstein supports owners and possessors of cultural monuments through grants for the safeguarding, preservation, and restoration of these important cultural assets. The program aims to long-term preserve cultural heritage and strengthen Schleswig-Holstein's identity by financially supporting necessary monument-related measures.

Who is funded

This funding program is aimed at owners, possessors, and authorized representatives of cultural monuments in Schleswig-Holstein to support their safeguarding and preservation. The goal is to long-term preserve the state's cultural heritage and strengthen regional identity.

What is funded

The funding program supports monument-related additional expenses for measures on cultural monuments. These include urgent safeguarding work, skilled craft preservation services, the renewal of historic building components, and the conservation and restoration of monument substance and its fittings. Accompanying measures such as expert opinions and documentation are also eligible for funding.

Type and Scope of Funding

Funding is provided as a grant in the form of project funding, with the amount depending on the type and scope of the measure and able to reach up to 100 percent of total expenditures in staggered funding rates. The grants are conditionally repayable.

Conditions and Requirements

To avail of the funding, certain conditions must be met, including ensuring the overall financing and the priority use of other funding. It is also important that the measure may only commence after receiving the grant decision, and a repayment obligation exists under certain circumstances if the monument is sold.

Application Procedure

Applications for funding must generally be submitted in writing to the State Office for Monument Preservation by June 30th of the current fiscal year. The required forms are available from the granting authority. The application must include details on the amount of the requested grant, a precise description of the planned measure, architectural drawings (if required), a service description, a timeline, a comprehensive financing plan (including other funding), information on VAT deduction eligibility, and a declaration of commencement of the measure. The granting authority may request additional documents.

The funding guideline for the preservation of cultural monuments forms the primary legal basis of this program, supplemented by the Schleswig-Holstein Monument Protection Act, the State Budget Ordinance, and other administrative regulations. The official texts are accessible through the announcement of the Ministry.
