Funding for Forest Environmental and Climate Services and Forest Conservation (Forest Environmental Measures Directive)

Last updated: 14.6.2025
Grant

The state of Saxony-Anhalt promotes the preservation and improvement of natural habitats and biodiversity in forests through the Forest Environmental Measures Directive. This program offers grants to forest owners and forestry associations to implement measures such as refraining from using biotope trees and old-growth stands, and leaving deadwood. The aim is to protect and strengthen the forest as a valuable ecosystem.

Who is funded?

This funding is aimed at natural and legal persons under private and public law who own or manage forestry areas. Recognized forestry associations and equivalent associations within the meaning of the Federal Forest Act are also eligible to apply. The program aims to support the preservation, protection, and improvement of natural habitats and biodiversity in the forests of Saxony-Anhalt.

What is funded?

The funding program supports measures for the preservation and improvement of biodiversity in forest areas of Natura 2000 and other forest areas with high nature conservation value in Saxony-Anhalt. The funded measures include, among others, refraining from using biotope trees and old-growth stands, and leaving deadwood.

Type and Extent of Funding

The program offers non-repayable grants as project funding, based on flat rates. The amount of the grant varies depending on the type and scope of the measure and tree species, with a minimum amount of 500 Euros per application.

Conditions and Requirements

To receive funding, specific conditions must be met, including the implementation of the project in designated nature conservation areas in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, requirements for the verifiability and labeling of measures, as well as compliance with forest management plans, must be observed.

Application Procedure

The application procedure for forest environmental measures is carried out in writing by January 31st of each year at the competent Office for Agriculture, Land Reorganization, and Forests (ALFF) in Saxony-Anhalt. The decision on approval is made at the discretion of the authority and within the framework of available budget funds.

The 'Forest Environmental Measures Directive' is the primary legal basis for this funding program, supported by state legal provisions such as the Saxony-Anhalt State Budget Ordinance and various EU regulations within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy and rural development. These establish the legal framework for the promotion of forest and nature conservation.
