Scholarships for Improving Medical Care in Rural Areas (Medical Scholarship Directive – MedStipR)

The Medical Scholarship in Bavaria is aimed at human medicine students who are willing to take up medical practice in rural Bavaria after successfully completing their studies and specialist medical training. The goal is to secure long-term medical care in these areas.

The scholarship funds living costs during human medicine studies to attract future doctors to work in rural Bavaria. It is a tied grant for the duration of studies, but for a maximum of four years.

Funding is provided as a tied grant to cover living costs. The scholarship amounts to €600 per month and is granted for a maximum of 48 months, but not longer than until graduation.

The awarding of the scholarship is subject to clear conditions, particularly the obligation to work in rural Bavaria for at least five years after completing studies and specialist medical training. Failure to fulfill these obligations may require repayment of the scholarship, with hardship cases being considered.

The scholarship application is submitted to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety. Approval is granted after reviewing the documents, and payments are made monthly. A semesterly submission of the enrollment certificate is required.

The legal basis for the Medical Scholarship Program is the Medical Scholarship Directive (MedStipR) of the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care. It regulates the awarding of scholarships to promote medical care in rural Bavaria and is subject to the general budgetary provisions of the Free State of Bavaria.
