Grant
Last updated: 14.6.2025

The State of Berlin supports the organization of national and international sports events through grants. This funding aims to generate a positive return for the city of Berlin by contributing to its image, sports development, and economic value. Recognized sports organizations that demonstrate an unavoidable funding deficit are eligible to apply.

Who is funded

Recognized sports organizations in Berlin receive grants for national and international sports events to create added value for Berlin as a sports metropolis and achieve a positive city return.

What is funded

Funding is provided for the preparation, organization, and follow-up of national and international sports events in Berlin that demonstrate an unavoidable funding deficit. Specific expense categories are eligible for funding, while others, such as personnel costs for regularly employed staff or construction costs, are excluded.

Type and Scope of Funding

The funding is provided as a non-repayable grant in the form of project funding, primarily as deficit financing. Up to 90 percent of the unavoidable funding deficit can be covered, with a minimum own contribution of 10 percent required.

Conditions and Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate proper business management and use the funds for their intended purpose. Grants are only awarded for measures not yet started if an unavoidable funding deficit exists and all revenue possibilities have been exhausted. Additionally, specific requirements regarding anti-doping, location marketing, and contract drafting must be observed.

Application Procedure

The application process begins with an event notification by October 15 of the preceding year via the relevant sports association. The formal grant application must be submitted to the Senate Department for Interior, Digitalization and Sports no later than three months before the start of the event. Approval is at the discretion of the authority and within the framework of available budget funds.

The funding program is based on the "Guidelines for the Promotion of National and International Sports Events in Berlin (Sports Promotion Guidelines – SFR V)" of August 22, 2018, which were amended by announcement of February 6, 2023. These guidelines refer to the Law on the Promotion of Sports in the State of Berlin (SportFG) and the State Budget Ordinance (LHO).
