Microelectronics Research by Consortium Partners within the KDT Joint Undertaking
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports research and development in electronics and intelligent systems within the European partnership "Key Digital Technologies" (KDT). This grant supports high-risk, highly innovative industrial collaborative projects that contribute to Europe's digital sovereignty and generate sustainable economic benefits for Germany. It is a joint project that brings together science and industry.
Who is Funded
This funding is aimed at companies, universities, and research institutions in Germany that are active in European collaborative projects on microelectronics research. The goal is to strengthen value creation in Germany and Europe and to support the German government's High-Tech Strategy 2025.
What is Funded
Industrial research and development projects with a high degree of innovation in the field of electronic systems and intelligent systems are funded. This includes both application-oriented and near-basic research. Pure basic research without a civilian focus is excluded.
Type and Scope of Funding
The program grants non-repayable subsidies for microelectronics projects. Funding rates vary depending on the applicant and type of research but can reach up to 100% of eligible expenses. Projects are generally funded for up to four years.
Conditions and Requirements
For funding, strict conditions regarding innovation level, risk, and collaboration in joint projects must be met. Specific state aid regulations must be observed, and the results must be utilized in Germany or the EEA/Switzerland. Transparency and science communication are also important aspects.
Application Procedure
The application procedure is two-stage, starting with a European project outline, followed by a formal national application. Submissions are made electronically via specialized portals, and deadlines are announced annually. A positive evaluation by the KDT Joint Undertaking is a prerequisite for the national funding request.
Legal Basis
The funding guideline is based on the EU Regulation on establishing Joint Undertakings under Horizon Europe and the relevant paragraphs of the Federal Budget Code. State aid is granted according to the European Commission's General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER), which also defines cumulation rules.
