Greening of Roofs

This funding program is aimed at non-public property and building owners as well as other legally authorized persons in the State of Bremen. The aim is to promote voluntary roof greening measures to contribute to decentralized rainwater retention, reduce heavy rain risks, relieve the sewage system, and improve the local urban climate.

Funding is provided for the installation of green roofs on new buildings and the retrofitting of existing roofs with extensive or intensive greening. All costs incurred from the top edge of the roof waterproofing are eligible for funding, including measures to improve the load-bearing capacity of roofs. Roof greening on asbestos or PVC-containing roof coverings and areas under 10 square meters are not funded.

Funding is provided as a grant with variable funding amounts, which depend on the degree of rainwater retention and the intensity of greening. Additionally, there is a bonus for biodiversity-promoting planting. The maximum funding amount is limited per measure and per square meter.

Various conditions must be met for the application and implementation of the funded measures. These include ensuring overall financing, compliance with technical standards, and observance of exclusion criteria such as rent increases. There is no legal entitlement to funding.

The application must be submitted to Bremer Umwelt Beratung e.V. before the start of the measure. After review and approval, grants are paid out upon completion and inspection of the installation. There is no legal entitlement to funding.

Funding is based on the Funding Guideline for the Granting of Subsidies for the Greening of Roofs in the State of Bremen dated November 9, 2023. This guideline establishes the basis for the program's objectives, funding items, and conditions.
